In September of 2020, we profiled Jaire, a former RWCI resident and rising senior at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T), in our e-newsletter. Before attending college, he interned with Renaissance West STEAM Academy (RWSA) and helped facilitate out-of-school time activities during the summer. Additionally, he dedicated his time to serve as a Servant Leader for Freedom Schools at RWSA.

Within his time at N.C A&T, he’s become a mentor, assisting Sophomores with navigating the social work program, a member of multiple committees, and interned with the Greensboro Housing Authority while simultaneously serving students as the Vice President for the Social Work and Sociology program.

Jaire persistently shares his aspirations with the RWCI Team and has expressed his devotion to becoming a Social Work Entrepreneur and Professor. Nearly a year later, he continues to model the determination to achieve his goal. On May 9, 2021, Jaire graduated from N.C. A&T with a Bachelor of Social Work. Faithful to follow his dreams, he applied to Master’s programs at several universities and received acceptance to all, but ultimately decided to attend the University of Illinois at Chicago for his MSW.

HUD article states, “Of students who successfully graduate from high school or complete a general educational development program, 64% of middle-income students and 84% of high-income students go on to college or trade school within two years compared with 58% of low-income students. Furthermore, low-income, first-generation students who do enter college are four times more likely than other students to leave after their first year.”

Jaire dismantled any statistic stacked against him.

Jaire’s accomplishments inspire the people he’s collaborated with, the spaces he’s occupied, and our organization as he constitutes RWCI’s first college success story. We anticipate more college success stories from our residents, scholars, and leaders at RenWest, yet we are happy to introduce this one as the first.

Congratulations on all your accomplishments, Jaire!
